Jaakko Jaskari

30 years with a camera

Photographer, video producer and documentary filmmaker. I have worked for media houses, industry, organisations and artists in Finland and on five continents.

A professional you can send anywhere

Alongside work all over Finland, I have filmed on worksites in Germany, France, the Netherlands, Denmark, Spain, Norway, Sweden, Dubai, Australia, Portugal, the USA, the UK, Poland and Monaco, at the CERN research centre in Switzerland, at car factories in the Philippines, at eye clinics in Tanzania, and at wineries and many kinds of industrial sites in Australia. I have shot two documentaries in Indonesia and the Philippines. In China and Australia, Petteri Harjula and I made technology reports for NIKOLA. In Uruguay I filmed and directed a documentary about Finnish pulp mills, presented by Teivo Teivainen, Professor of World Politics.

In a foreign country, a filming day works when you get along with the interpreter and the site supervisor. That is why I always start with the people and only then the equipment. Interviewees can speak in their own words, and you can hear it in the finished video.

I also write magazine articles. For Ahjo magazine’s story on Australia, I did both the text and the photos.

Experience over the years

I graduated as a photographer from the Lahti Institute of Design in 1995 and that same year helped found Mediakylpylä, a new kind of media school. I led its photography programme in 1995–1997 and 2000–2002.

In the 2000s I shot portraits, reportage, and advertising and product photos for Finland’s largest media houses, companies, trade unions and entrepreneurs. I worked as a freelance photographer for ANNA magazine for 8 years and for APU magazine for 12 years.

From 2010 onwards I moved into producing corporate videos and documentaries. I completed the vocational qualification in video editing at Keuda in 2013. I have been filming with drones since 2015.
