eCorollan tarina
the Story of eCorolla

A group of Finnish Open Source enthusiasts (“eCars - Now!”) converted a Toyota Corolla from an internal combustion engine car to an electric car in 2007-2009. Why did they go through all the trouble?

Today, electric cars can be seen everywhere. However in the early 2000s they were sheer science fiction fantasy. Instead of developing eCars, traditional car manufacturers seemed to concentrate in convincing everyone that electric cars were too complex to make.

"eCars - Now!" volunteers decided to show the way to automotive industry, how to build electric cars with Finnish sisu (“guts”). The project was intense and full of excitement. And many times very close to failure because of high expectations.

The idea was to share modular conversion instructions and inventions online as Open Source. The mission was to spark a revolution where all ICE cars in the world could be converted to emission-free.

The project received considerable publicity. Finland was given a chance to be the pioneer in the whole electric car industry.

What happened to eCorolla? Where did “eCars - Now!” go? Or is the time of conversion to electric cars rather ahead of us?

This is the story of eCorolla and “eCars - Now!”
